511,636. Automatic control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). June 3. 1938, No. 16686. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Electromotive force.-For automatically controlling the voltage of a generator 19, a piletype resistance 41 is series connected in the field circuit of an exciter 22 for the generator. Variations in the generator voltage alter the excitation of a magnet 33 causing the armature thereof mounted on a shaft 30 to take up a new position under the action of a biasing spring 34. The pile-resistance is thereby altered through crank- 29 and rods 28 and acts on the exciter to bring' the generator voltage back to normal. The pileresistance has a negative resistance-current characteristic serving to increase the range of voltage control automatically.
