617,235. Automatic control systems for dynamo-electric machines &c. SOMERVILLE, T. B., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. March 25, 1943, No. 4878. [Class 38 (iv)] Voltage; electrical and other variables in general.-A regulating system or control device comprises two carbon pile or like resistance elements 12, 13 mechanically coupled to be varied in opposite senses by control means which include a polarized magnetic system 1 ... 7 and a control winding responsive to a controlling or a controlled quantity, or to both, so that the forces on the resistance elements will be balanced for values of the quantities which have a desired relation to each other and a change in this relation will cause differential action of the currents in the resistances to produce a regulating action to restore the relation. As shown, a bar armature 10 pivoted at 11, for example as in Specification 581,482, [Group XXV], carries a spring member 18 which reacts through pins 21, 22, upon each pile to define a normally balanced position of the bar with reference to the magnetic system, which may be polarized by a permanent magnet 4 or by a coil. The controlling and controlled quantities may each be applied to this system in opposition by a winding or windings, or one of them may be applied mechanically. Either quantity may be constituted by one or two or more components which may be applied through one or more windings ; or partly by mechanical means. A system providing for regulation of the voltage of a generator 23 at any value through a range of positive and. negative values has differential exciting windings 25 respectively in series with the carbon piles 14 and coils 8, 9 on the regulator producing flux variations in opposite senses in the ends of the armature bar and connected to be responsive to the difference between the generator voltage and the voltage pre-set upon a reversible potentiometer 24. These control devices may replace the vibrating regulator devices in the systems described in Specification 616,516.
