894,416. Automatic voltage-control systems. C.A.V. Ltd. Oct. 12, 1960 [Oct. 15, 1959], No. 34929/59. Class 38 (4). In a voltage regulator of the vibrating contact type a pair of contacts 10 in series with the field winding 15 of a generator are shunted by a winding 18 and are controlled by a winding 11, one contact and one end of the winding 11 being connected to one generator output terminal 14 and the other contact and the other end of the winding 11 being connected together and to the other output terminal 13 over a resistance 12. The average field current tends to decrease as the speed of the generator increases because of the operation of the contacts 10 under the influence of the coil 11. With increasing speed, therefore, the voltage across resistance 12 tends to decrease whereas the voltage across winding 11 tends to increase. The output voltage which is the sum of the voltages across resistance 12 and winding 11 therefore remains substantially constant.
