[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In a voltage regulator, the operating coil controls an armature which progressively effects the insertion of series resistors in the field circuit of a generator. As shown, Fig. 1, the control coil L1 positions an armature which causes contact members to engage the fixed contacts C1 ... C6 which short the resistors R1 ... R6 in series with the shunt field of generator G1. At low generator voltages the field of the second regulator coil L2, which is employed to reduce to percentage voltage variation permissible, opposes L1, but as the voltage rises the energization of L2 falls until, finally, contact C7 is made and the current through L2 is reversed so that L1 and L2 are now mutually assisting and the tendency of C7 to vibrate is reduced. The movement of the regulator armature is made proportional to the voltage across coil L1 by means of springs, and the profiling of the member engaging the contact members is such as to cause each contact to be made at the correct voltage level. In a further modification, not shown, the coil L2 is removed and two neon tubes are placed in series with coil L1.
