Abstract
878,239. Chimneys. VORKAUF, H. June 17, 1960 [Jan. 14, 1960; Jan. 25, 1960], No. 21383/60. Class 25 A converter chimney constructed as a heat exchanger to utilize the heat contained in the gases emanating from a converter is characterized in that, after the converter has been tilted into the blowing position, a gap between the converter mouth and the opening at the entrance to the chimney can be regulated so as to control the quantity of air supplied in accordance with that required for the combustion of the carbon monoxide contained in the gases. The gap between the converter 1 and chimney 3 is adjustable by means of a conical sealing ring 4 which overlaps the converter mouth and the outer diameter of which lies close to the edge 5 of the chimney entrance. The ring is of frusto-conical form both inside and out, is water-cooled by connection to the cooling system of the chimney, and is adjustable to various heights by counterbalances 6. In another embodiment the ring is replaced by adjustable dampers which are mounted on the chimney to be tiltable downwardly to conform to the shape of the converter mouth around which they overlap. In a further embodiment the converter is raised by hydraulic means to close the gap and bear against a bearing surface on the base of the chimney.
