Abstract
770,271. Open fireplaces. HAZEL, A. C. July 23, 1952 [July 23, 1951], No. 17357/51. Class 126 An open fireplace unit comprises a metal box or casing open at the front and provided at its upper end with a body portion of upwardly tapering shape to form a funnel the reduced open upper end of which is adapted to be sealed to the chimney proper in a substantially airtight manner. The fireplace unit shown is of all metal construction and comprises five parts -(1) an ash pan 34; (2) an openfronted box 10 formed with grate supporting ledges 33 and front bar supporting flanges 14, (3) an upward tapering hood or body portion 16 fitted at its upper end with a damper 24 and formed with an arch-shaped front opening 26; (4) a chimney connecting piece 29 and (5) a grate (not shown). The upper part of box 10 and lower part of hood 16 are formed with engaging flange surfaces whilst the piece 29 fits over upstanding flanges at the top of the hood 16. According to the Provisional Specification, the open fireplace may be converted into a closed one by withdrawing the ash pan from under the grate, inverting it and placing it so inverted over the fire on the grate.
