Abstract
876,408. Pipe couplings. FORMICA Ltd. June 22, 1960 [July 3, 1959], No. 23018/59. Class 99(1). A coupling comprises a cylindrical body 1 including as integral parts thereof an external wall 2 and an externally grooved internal wall 3, which walls define an annular space, an internally serrated clamping ring 16, a resilient sealing device, and means to engage with the body and capable of exerting an axial force whereby when the end of a pipe is fitted into the annular space the application of axial force causes the grooves of the wall 3 to engage with the internal surface of the pipe 8 and the serrations of the ring 16 to be deformed and forced into the exterior surface of the pipe. As shown, the sealing device comprises a rubber ring 15 between metal washers 13, 14 and compressed by a gland 11 screwed into the body, the washers having a series of spigots 18, 19 aligned with holes in the ring and being brought into abutment to limit compression of the ring. The protrusions on the ring 16 have a substantially frusto-conical formation and are deflected by abutment with the frusto-conical wall 10 of the body and forced into the wall of the pipe.
