Abstract
621,908. Pipe joints. PARKER APPLIANCE CO. Nov. 14, 1946, No. 33769. Convention date, May 20, 1944. [Class 99(i)] A coupling for a tube T, Fig. 2, of uniform diameter comprises a nut 2 screwing on to a sleeve 1 and engaging a contractile member 3 adapted to grip the tube, a gasket 5 being disposed in a recess 20 in the sleeve 1 and comprising a resilient ring, the cross-sectional area of which is less than that of the recess and which is deformed by the pressure of the fluid in the tube so as to seal the joint. The nut 2 compresses the member 3 through a collet 4 tapered internally to conform with an external taper on the member 3 which has a head portion 10 and a slotted clamping portion, the latter having internal ribs 12, 13. When the coupling is tightened, the parts are as shown with slots 11 in the member 3 narrowed by compression and the ribs biting into the tube. The liquid inside the tube enters the recess 20 by a passage 7. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the head 10 is slotted and has a conical surface engaged by a similar surface on the collet 4 to cause the head to grip the tube. A further modification, Fig. 8, comprises two coupling members for joining pipes T<SP>1</SP>, T<SP>2</SP>, comprising a single sleeve 1, slotted clamping- members 11 integral therewith and nuts 2 directly engaging the outer conical surfaces on the members.
