[Also in Group XXXIV] In order to provide a resilient mounting allowing limited radial movement of a pinion 5 driving the rack 1 of a steering-gear, the flanged bush 3 supporting the pinion spindle may carry two resilient bearing-bushes 6 for the spindle or may itself be resiliently mounted in the casing 2 by rings of rubber or the like, Fig. 3 (not shown). The bushes 6 may be wholly of rubber or polyurethane or may comprise a metal (e.g. sintered metal) lining surrounded by resilient material. The radial movement is limited by clearance 14. The pinion 2 is connected to the steering column, through a resilient coupling 22. The pinion spindle is axially located by a set-screw 19 and by a split-ring 18 which engages the bush 13 and is held in a spindle groove by a garter spring.
