Abstract
721,930. Toothed gearing. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION Sept. 9, 1953 [Sept. 18, 1952], No. 23491/52. Class 80 (1) In order to reduce backlash in worm gearing, the worm, which is shaped to follow the curvature of the worm wheel 1, is formed in two parts 2, 3 which are urged axially towards each other by a spring 8. The part 2 is fixed to or integral with the worm shaft while the part 3 is slidable on a square portion of the shaft and is recessed to receive the spring 8, which reacts on a plate 9 secured to the shaft. The plate may be replaced by some other abutment such as an adjustable nut. In a modification, the spring is replaced by a screw arrangement which is adjusted to compensate for wear. The gearing is applicable to computing and other precision instruments, to gearcutting machines and to steering and other gear.
