Abstract
873,183. Turn-button fasteners. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 29, 1960 [Feb. 10, 1959], No. 4567/59. Class 44. A casement window fastener comprises a body part 5, 6 adapted to be mounted adjacent the free edge of the window, a handle 9 angularly movable on the body part, a catch piece 12 angularly movable relative to the body part, driving means connecting the catch piece to the handle for angular movement therewith, keyoperable means for disengaging the driving means, and spring-loaded means 17 for automatically locking the catch piece against angular movement relative to the body part when the driving means is disengaged. As shown, the handle is retained on the body portion 5 by means of a spring clip 10 which surrounds a sleeve 8 formed on the boss of the handle. The catch piece 12 includes a collar 11. A key-operable plug 13 having wheels for engagement with grooves in the boss of the handle 9 is in dog engagement with a cylindrical part 14 of the sleeve 8, the part 14 carrying an eccentric peg 15 which is engaged within a slot or groove formed in a bolt 16 extending laterally through apertures in the sleeve. The arrangement is such that in one angular setting of the plug 13, the outer end of the bolt is flush with the periphery of the sleeve 8 and in another setting enters a hole in the collar 11 and thereby connects the catch piece 12 to the handle 9. The spring- loaded locking means 17 is disposed to be in register with the hole in the collar 11 in the operative position of the catch piece 12, such that when the bolt 16 is withdrawn from the collar by key operation of the plug 13, the locking means 17 automatically enters the hole in the collar to lock the catch piece. A tubular spigot 19 on the rear body portion 6 engages within the sleeve 8, so that notches 20 on the spigot register with recesses 21 of the apertures in the sleeve when the apertures are in register with the locking means 17. A pair of pegs 22 on the bolt 16 prevents the latter being withdrawn until the recesses 21 are in register with the notches 20. Undercut projections 23 on the rear face of the portion 6 slidably engage with guides 24 on a mounting plate 25 which may be secured to a metal window by a screw 28 engaging a stud 29 located in a metal bracket 26 on the window. Alternatively, the plate may be screwed to a wooden window frame. A pin 30 prevents separation of the body part and mounting plate when the catch piece 12 is in the operative position. A spring-loaded peg 31 and a notch in the sleeve 8 facilitates reengagement of the bolt 16 with the hole in the collar 11.
