Abstract

871,092. Pipe couplings. VICTAULIC CO. OF AMERICA. May 29, 1959 [May 29, 1958], No. 18382/59. Class 99(1). A coupling housing 2 in the form of a segment of a cylinder has radially inwardly extending portions 11 presenting, segmental cylindrical surfaces 11, a gasket-mounting channel 12 between the portions 11, and pipe-engaging grips 18 carried by and fixedly engaged by the portions 11 and mounted to project radially inwardly of the housing with respect to the surfaces 11<SP>1</SP>, the grips presenting protruding end edge portions 28 departing abruptly from and with respect to the contour of the surfaces 11<SP>1</SP>. As shown, the coupling comprises a pair of identical housings 2, 3 each provided with lugs 4, 5 formed with non-circular openings for the reception of a mated non- circular enlargement 8 of bolts 6. The grips 18, consisting of solid cylinders, are seated in bores 19 in the ribs 11 and have the axes thereof at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the coupling. The edges 28 of the grips dig into the surfaces of the pipes 24, 25. In a modification, frusto-conical grips 53 are held in place within channels between ribs 46, 47 by pins 56.
