[Also in Group XXV] Flanges 12 on pipe ends 10, 11 are drawn together by clamping means 14 and compress a resilient sealing washer 13 received in shallow concentric recesses 15 in the opposed ends of flanges 12 of which the peripheral portions 16 receive an external rib 17 of the washer 13. The dimension of the washer 13 in its free state from each end face 18 to the face 19 of the rib is equal to the depth of the recess 15 so that the flanges engage the related faces of the washer simultaneously and the rib 17 is more tightly compressed than the main portion when the coupling is tightened. As described the flanges are fixed to the pipes by providing internal circumferential grooves 20 into which the material of the pipe and walls is expanded. The peripheral rib 17 is approximately half the thickness of the main portion of the washer and in its free state projects radially a similar amount or less. The clamping device 14 comprises two semi-circular members hinged together at one end and tightened by a tangential clamping screw at the other. The outward faces 25 of the flanges are conoidal and are engaged by complementary shaped walls of the recesses 26 of the clamping members which are of arcuate shape extending along the middle parts only of the clamping members so as to engage the flanges on opposite sides of the pipe. When the clamping screw is tightened the sealing ring 13 is compressed and its bore tends to bulge inwards thus avoiding the formation of crevices. The pipe may be of stainless steel, the ends projecting beyond the flanges and finished flush.
