870,866. Gripping loads. BENNETT, G. H. April 6, 1959 [April 9, 1958; April 21, 1958; April 29, 1958; July 26, 1958], Nos. 11139/58, 12494/58, 13650/58 and 24133/58. Classes 78 (3) and 78 (4). A gripper device comprises a pair of gripper arms 8 secured to channelsection members 6, 7 which are relatively slidable under the action of double-acting fluid-pressure rams 12, 13 in a channel-section arm 4 mounted on a conventional lifting-device, such as the lifting carriage of a masted lift-truck, and one or more intermediate gripping-members 20 supported from the arm 4, and each being provided with two gripping-plates and means for forcing these plates apart to provide a gripping action. The rams 12, 13 are each pivoted between lugs on the members 6 or 7 and lugs 14 on a cover-plate 9 secured to the arm 4. The intermediate gripping member comprises plates 24, 25 each pivoted by means of links 23 to arms 20 pivotally suspended from the arm 4 and each provided with a resilient gripping surface 26, the plates being forced apart to provide a gripping- action by means of a rod 30, Fig. 8, to which are secured wedges 31 which engage wedges 32 secured to the plates. The rod is actuated by means of a ram 35, and spring means are provided to move the plates together when the pressure in the ram is released. In a modification, the plates 24, 25 are pivoted directly to the arms 20. In a further modification. Figs. 9-11 (not shown) the gripper arms extend in a horizontal direction from the members 6, 7, and the arm 4 instead of depending therefrom.
