Abstract
868,654. Photo-electric counting. IGRANIC ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 24, 1958 [April 4, 1957], No. 9323/58. Class 40(3) [Also in Group XXX] In a system for counting flat, flexible articles, e.g. folded newspapers, the articles are conveyed between endless wires 10, 11 until they reach a point where wires 11 are reversed around a drum 14, beyond which the articles are engaged by downwardly moving runs of endless wires 15 which cause the articles to be flipped in turn through a light beam 24 emanating from a source 25 and impinging on a photo-cell 26. A second light beam 27 passes upwardly from a light source 28 to a mirror 29 and thence to the photo-cell 26, this second light beam intersecting the path of the articles at a point in advance of the light beam 24. The photo-cell 26 is connected to a counter mechanism so arranged that a count is made only when both beams 24 and 27 are broken. This is said to avoid an article being counted twice as a result of its tail end flipping upwardly through the beam 24 after its forward end has passed downwardly through the beam 24. Instead of the second beam 27 passing to the same photo-cell as the beam 24 it may pass to a second photo-cell which replaces the mirror 29, the two photo-cells being in this arrangement connected in parallel in a counting circuit arranged to respond only when the light beams impinging on both photo-cells are broken simultaneously.
