Abstract
902,902. Sorting apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Oct. 24, 1958 [Oct. 31, 1957], No. 34085/58. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for distinguishing between letters and picture postcards for use in a lettersorting arrangement, e.g. that disclosed in Specification 887,648, which includes letter conveying means A and stamp position detectors L, E, comprises photo-electric detectors I and II which are positioned on opposite sides of the conveying means to receive light reflected from a central portion of each passing letter or card and evaluating means R to which the photo-electric signals are applied via amplifiers V1, V2, amplitude filters AF1, AF2 and storage means SP1, SP2. The difference in brightness between the faces of a picture postcard produces a signal from the evaluator which renders ineffective the stamp position detector, either L or E, which scans the picture side of the postcard.
