Abstract
867,635. Photoflash lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 28, 1959 [June 3, 1958], No. 14482/59. Class 9(2). A photoflash lamp comprising a cylindrical glass bulb 1 containing a combustible filling has recessed ends to house electric contacts 6, 7 and so protect the ignition means from stray electrostatic charges. To make the bulb, the ends of a piece of glass tubing may be heated before pressing-in the cup-shaped contacts. Contact 7 may be secured to an electrode 4, while contact 6 has a central opening 12, through which priming 5 is applied to the electrode 4. The bulb is then filled with shredded foil or wire, before the creation of an oxygen atmosphere in the bulb. The electrode 3 attached to a sealing disc is then inserted in the contact 6 and soldered in position. The combustible filling may be aluminium, magnesium or zirconium and the primer is a porous mixture of a metallic powder such as zirconium, or zirconium mixed with magnesium, and an oxidizing agent such as potassium perchlorate, bonded by nitrocellulose. In an example 90% by weight zirconium and 10% potassium perchlorate is suspended in a solution of nitrocellulose in amylacetate.
