Abstract
865,091. Buffer stops. PLOWRIGHT BROS. Ltd. Aug. 2, 1957 [Aug. 4, 1956], No. 24090/56. Class 104 (2). A resilient buffer comprises a stationary body 1, a buffer member 4 slidably mounted in the body 1, relatively movable piston (8, 9) and cylinder (6, 7) components whereof one component is movable with the buffer member 4 against fluid at one side of the pistons 8, 9 and against a spring 15, and a reservoir 16 mounted along each cylinder 6, 7 and communicating with each side of the pistons 8, 9, to control the fluid flow to each side of the pistons 8, 9, by a predetermined arrangement of holes 17; 17a in the walls of the cylinders 6, 7. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the pistons 8, 9 are mounted on piston-rods 10, 11 in cylinders 6, 7 connected to the buffer member 4 by crossheads 5. The piston-rods 10, 11 are located between spaced bracets 12, 13 secured to the hollow body 1, to allow the pistons 8, 9 to align with the cylinders 6, 7. A single spring 15 is located between an extension 4b and an abutment 4c on the rear end of the buffer member 4 and within a sleeve 14 and the rear wall la of the hollow body 1. The holes 17 in the walls of the cylinders 6, 7 decrease in size from the front towards the rear of the cylinders, the last hole 17a, however, is considerably greater in size than the first. In an alternative arrangement, shown in Fig. 6, the cylinders 6, 7 are separate from the buffer member 4 and are fixed to the hollow body 1 by brackets 19, 20. The pistonrods 10, 11 have rear extensions 10a, 11a on which are mounted springs 23, 24 surrounding the extensions and engaging abutments 10b, 11b at one end and entering sleeves 21, 22 and engaging the rear wall 1a of the hollow body 1 at the other. The front extensions 10c, 11c of the piston-rods 10, 11 abut projections 4b, 4c on the buffer member 4 for movement thereby.
