Abstract
1,238,508. Telescopic hydraulic shock absorber. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. 15 Aug., 1969 [27 Aug., 1968], No. 40960/68. Heading F2S. Movements of the piston 16 of a tube-withina-tube type hydraulic shock absorber are only lightly damped when the piston is oscillating about a minimum load position I, but are more heavily damped when the piston is oscillating about a loaded position, e.g. II. When the piston is in position II, the valves in the piston alone effect the damping, but when the piston is in position I a fluid by-pass groove 60 in the inner tube 10 modifies the damping. The groove may be replaced by a pair of axially spaced ports (not shown) in the inner tube, thus providing a fluid by-pass from one side of the piston to the other through conduits in the reservoir 14. Alternatively, the inner tube may have a portion of increased diameter.
