Abstract
853,963. Protective cut-out arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. March 11, 1957 [March 13, 1956], No. 7829/56. Class 38 (5). A protective arrangement for a polyphase alternator 1 comprises a dynamo-electric machine having a stator with windings 5 energized from current transformers 6 so as to provide a rotating flux and a rotor 7 which is driven by a synchronous motor 3 in the same direction as the rotating flux. Hence when the output of the alternator 1 is balanced no voltage appears at slip-rings 9 connected to the rotor windings 8, but in the event of unbalance, the negative sequence components produce a flux rotating in the reverse direction to the rotor 7 so that a voltage appears at the slip-rings 9. This voltage is proportional in magnitude to the magnitude of the negative sequence components and is of a frequency twice that of the alternator. A protective relay 10 is supplied from the sliprings and may be tuned to the double frequency.
