Abstract
853,192. Spark apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. March 25, 1958 [March 29, 1957], No. 10387/57. Class 39(1). An enclosed spark gap has radio-active material 6 located in a recess formed in the lead 4 to one electrode 1 and communicating with the gap through an aperture 7. The radioactive material may be a thin disc of thorium or radium sulphate sandwiched between suitable metal sheets. The electrodes 1, 2 may be of tungsten or nickel and the leads 4, 5 of a nickelchrome alloy suitable for sealing to the glass envelope 3 which may be filled with hydrogen or a rare gas such as xenon. The radio-active material makes the breakdown voltage of the gap independent of ambient light conditions. The electrodes 1, 2 may be spaced at their opposing rims by an annular ceramic washer provided with apertures to permit the gas filling to enter the discharge gap.
