Abstract

851,143. Arc-rupturing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1958 [Jan. 22, 1957], No. 1131/58. Class 38 (5). A circuit-interrupter with fixed and moving, main and arcing contacts and a blowout coil, has an inductance between a main contact and a terminal stud which is connected to one end of the blowout coil. Fig. 3 shows diagrammatically a D.C. circuit-breaker having a main contact 2 and arcing contact 3 mounted on a contact arm 17 actuated through toggles 30, 35 controlled by a closing magnet 41, lever 36 and holding magnet 21. The main contact 2 cooperates with the main fixed contact 1 mounted on a terminal stud 13, and the arcing contact 3 co-operates with the fixed arcing contact 4 which is insulated from the stud 13 by a plate 13a. A blowout coil 8 and arc runners 6, 44 are connected as shown, and a plurality of iron laminations 46 are mounted around the stud 13. Under normal load conditions the current passes mainly through the main contacts 1, 2. Under fault conditions, however, the fault current with its steep wave front is forced through the arcing contacts 3, 4 and blowout coil 8 by the high inductance of the stud 13. Fig. 8 shows a similar circuit-breaker having moving contacts 2, 3 co-operating with fixed contacts 1, 4. The arc runner 6 is spaced from the contact 4 and a pair of auxiliary blowout coils 63, mounted on the same magnetic structure as the coil 8, and with a capacitor C in series, are connected across main contact studs 13, 20, the stud 13 being encircled by laminations 46 as in Fig. 3. During opening of the circuit-breaker, the increasing arc voltage is applied to the auxiliary blowout coils 63 so that they assist the main blowout coil 8. The capacitor C lowers the timeconstant of the coils 63 and prevents current passing through them with the breaker open. In an A.C. circuit-breaker (Fig. 11, not shown) the auxiliary coils 63 are in series with a switch which is open when the circuit-breaker is fully open.
