Abstract
1,033,720. Vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 30, 1964 [Dec. 6, 1963 (2)], No. 48537/64. Heading H2B. An axial magnetic field 50 created between the contacts 17, 18 of a vacuum switch by a series-connected coil 52 wound around the outside of the envelope is effective to confine the arc and thus to reduce peak arc voltages when interrupting heavy currents. In a modification (Figs. 4, 5, not shown) a saturable core 60 of grain oriented silicon steel shunts part of the magnetic field so that, in the region of the contacts, it is relatively smaller for low currents (Fig. 6, not shown). To ensure that the field disappears at current zero and that normal interupting ability of the switch is not impaired, phase differences and therefore eddy currents must be reduced to a minimum so that core 60 is constructed as a number of laminated sections; the end plates 12, 13 of the envelope are of stainless steel and spiral slots 32 in the arc surfaces of the contacts are extended into the centre of the contact where holes 70 are drilled.
