Abstract
590,970. Arc-rupturing in switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and FELCE, A. April 26, 1945, No. 10519. [Class 38 (v)] In an air-break circuit-breaker, a coil to drive the arc into a chute is energized only after a delay so that it can be traversed only by small currents having insufficient inherent magnetic effect. The arc formed between contacts A', C' is transferred to arcing horns B, D as the contact C' passes through a slot in the horn D. Magnetic side plates G on either side of the arc assist it to rise immediately on the horns B, D, if the arc current is large enough. If the arc is small and persists until the contact C reaches a fixed contact E, a coil J of many turns on a magnetic core H is energized and the arc is driven into the chute. The chute may be provided with are-splitters and with a further coil of a few turns only connected between the fixed contact and external circuit.
