Abstract
642,628. Arc rupturing in switches. CZECHOSLOVAK METAL & ENGINEERING WORKS, NATIONAL CORPORATION, and ZAJIC, V. May 31, 1948, No. 14689. Convention date, June 12, 1947. [Class 38(v)] In an alternating-current switch having an arc-shoot with deionizing plates (not shown), the field of a main blow-out magnet 9 is delayed in phase behind the field of an auxiliary magnet 3 to cause the straightening of the arc so that it engages all the plates simultaneously. The arc 17 drawn between contacts 1, 2 is initially blown along the arc horns 5, 6 by the magnet 3, the roots of the arc lagging behind the centre of the arc. The centre of the arc, as at 18, comes under the influence of the field of magnet 9 first, and at parts of the A.C. cycle, has its movement opposed by this main field, so that the arc roots may catch up with the centre of the arc so straightening the arc, as at 19. The phase delay of the main blow-out field may be provided by connecting an inductance in. series with the energizing winding of the magnet 9, by providing the magnet 9 with a short-circuited turn on its laminated core or pole shoe, or by the use of a solid core and solid pole shoes for the magnet 9.
