Abstract

A lubricating grease composition comprises a lubricating oil gelled to a grease consistency with one or more soaps of hydroxy fatty acids and minor proportions of a water-soluble nitrite and an oil-soluble imidazoline. The lubricating oil may comprise a mineral and/or a synthetic oil. Examples of synthetic oils are synthetic hydrocarbon oils, silicate or phosphate esters, silicones (including chlorinated methyl phenyl silicone), polyoxyalkylene compounds and their ethers and esters, aliphatic diesters (e.g. dialkyl sebacates and adipates) and pentaerythritol esters. The soaps may be alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, lead or aluminium soaps and may be formed in situ. The nitrite may be an alkali metal nitrite, which may be supplemented by other water-soluble nitrites (e.g. organic nitrites such as substituted ammonium nitrites) or by water-soluble chromates (e.g. ammonium chromates or sodium or potassium dichromate). Among the oil-soluble imidazolines which may be employed are alkyl- or alkenyl-imidazolines, N-alkylol-2-alkyl (or alkenyl) imidazolines and N-aminoalkyl-2-alkyl (or alkenyl) imidazolines. The grease composition may contain additional ingredients such as oxidation inhibitors and metal deactivators. In an example, a lubricating grease consists of mineral lubricating oil, lithium 12-hydroxy-stearate, sodium nitrite and N-hydroxyethyl-2-heptadecyl imidazoline. For comparison purposes, a similar composition is described wherein the imidazoline is replaced by calcium petroleum sulphonate. A grease consisting of mineral lubricating oil, lithium 12-hydroxy-stearate and N-hydroxyethyl-2-heptadecenyl imidazoline is also described.
