A lubricant, particularly a grease, comprises a mineral or synthetic lubricating oil and 3 to 60% by weight of a soap-salt mixture, said mixture comprising alkaline earth metal salt of acetic acid and alkaline earth metal soap of C14 to C30 mono-unsaturated fatty acids, wherein the molar ratio of said salt to said soap is from 100:1 to 1000:1. The alkaline metal may be calcium, barium, strontium or magnesium. Mono-unsaturated fatty acids mentioned are oleic, palmitoleic, gadoleic, erucic, arachidonic, myristoleic, and commercial acids containing varying proportions of mono-unsaturated fatty acids, e.g. tallow acids. Synthetic oils mentioned are diesters, e.g. di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate, complex esters, carbonate esters, and polysilicones, and convention additives mentioned are phenyl-a -naphthylamine, sodium nitrite, lanolin, and dyes. The soap-salt mixture may be prepared in situ in the oil by co-neutralizing the fatty acids and acetic acid, or acetic anhydride, with alkaline earth metal base, and heating to 225-550 DEG F. to remove water. Inorganic acids, e.g. H2SO4, HNO3 and H3PO4, may be present during the neutralization, in which case the corresponding alkaline earth metal salts will presumably be formed. The greases may be blended with other greases containing, for example, polyethylene, clay, carbon black, or silica gel. Specification 995,347 is referred to.
