Abstract

A lubricating grease composition comprises a lubricating oil, a grease-forming proportion of an oleophilic clay and a minor proportion of an alkaline earth metal (Ca, Mg, Ba) carbonate. The oil may be any mineral oil of lubricating viscosity or a synthetic oil such as diesters (e.g. bis (2-ethyl hexyl) sebacate), aliphatic silicates fluorates and phosphates. The clay may be a montmorillonite (of Na, K or Li), wyoming bentonite or hectoriate which is modified by an aliphatic amine, amino-amide, imidazoline or quaternary ammonium base or salt. These modifying agents are extensively exemplified and include amino-amides of polyamino oxy compounds, e.g. the amides of hydroxy poly-propylene polyamines with fatty acids. The grease composition may further contain (1) an inorganic sulphide (e.g. molybdenum disulphide, an amorphous antimony tri, tetra or pentasulphide or mixtures thereof); and (2) a lead naphthenate. Further optional additives include aromatic amines (examples given), sodium and potassium nitrite, and terpenephosphous chloride reaction products.
