Abstract

1,259,379. Greases. SUN OIL CO. 12 May, 1969 [3 July, 1968], No. 24073/69. Heading C5F. A grease comprises a lubricating oil and, as a thickener, a minor amount of a mixture of a complex aluminium soap of an aliphatic carboxylic acid and of an aromatic carboxylic acid with 5-95 wt. per cent of a cation-modified clay. Suitable soaps are derived from stearic, palmitic, linoleic, tall oil, 12 hydroxystearic, benzoic toluic and ethylbenzoic acids and contain 0À8 to 1À5 hydroxyl anions per aluminium cation and from 0À2 to 5 aromatic carboxylic anions per aliphatic carboxylic anion and are exemplified by aluminium benzoate stearate and aluminium benzoate stearate palmitate. Suitable clays listed include montmorillonite, bentonite, saponite, nontronite, attapulgite, illite, zeolites and fullers' earth and are treated with an amine or a quaternary ammonium compound e.g. decylamine, lauryldimethylamine, and the tall oil salt of the heterocyclic amine I wherein R is -CH 2 .CH 2 OH, -CH 3 or -CH 2 CH 3 . Suitable mineral lubricating oils are naphthenic, paraffinic or aromatic oils of viscosity 50-5000 SUS at 100‹ F., and suitable synthetic oils are diesters, polyphenyl ethers and silicone oils. The greases are made directly or by blending, before or after milling, a grease containing the aluminium soap with a grease containing the treated clay. The soaps can be made by reaction in the base lubricant. The greases can also include atatic polypropylene, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, phenyl # naphthylamine or zinc di-n-butyl thiocarbamate.
