Abstract

A lubricating grease composition comprises a lubricating oil thickened with a calcium soap of a C12-24 hydroxy fatty acid, a lithium soap of a C12-24 fatty acid and a minor proportion of a glyceride of a hydroxy fatty acid. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil such as a simple ester, di-ester, complex ester, glycol, ether glycol, polyglycol or formal. The glycerides are those of saturated or unsaturated hydroxy fatty acids, those acids containing 12 to 24 carbon atoms being preferred, e.g. 12-hydroxy stearic and ricinoleic acids. These glycerides may be prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of natural glycerides such as castor oil, whale oil and fish oils. Optional ingredients mentioned are anti-oxidants, anti-corrosion agents and extreme pressure agents. In an example a lubricating grease comprises a mineral oil, lithium stearate, hydrogenated castor oil partially saponified with lime and phenyl beta naphthylamine. According to the Provisional Specification a minor proportion of a glyceride of one or more hydroxy fatty acids may be added to any conventional soap-based grease. Soaps mentioned are metal soaps, especially those of hydroxy fatty acids, e.g. aluminium, barium, calcium, lithium and sodium soaps and mixtures of such soaps. Specification 790,500 is referred to.
