A machine for preparing soil for planting comprises hammers 55, 56, 57 pivotally mounted on shafts 52, 54 and rotatable in a chamber 50. The hammers in one shaft rotate in the opposite direction to the hammers in an adjacent shaft. Powdered fertilizer and chemicals are distributed through adjustable openings in hoppers 35, 36, agitating screws 39, 40 being provided in the hoppers. The soil thrown into the chamber 50 by the hammers is mixed with fertilizers sprayed from conduits 70, 71. Exhaust gases from a driving motor 72 is led into the chamber 50 by means of a pipe 73. The soil is levelled by means of a rotatable blade 76 which is edged with a flexible material. Sub-soil cutters 83 are mounted on a bar 80 which is secured to a rotatable shaft 90 (not shown) which may be rotated to move the cutters 83 (not shown) into an inoperative position. A seed sewing device 95 is mounted to the rear of the cutters 83 and is driven from the motor 72. A number of tyred wheels are used to compact the ground after the seed has been sown and are transversely adjustable. The wheels are mounted on brackets pivoted on the machine and, the brackets are adjusted by means of hydraulic rams to raise or lower the rear part of the machine. A pair of wheels are provided at the front of the machine and the front of the machine may be adjusted by a hydraulic ram associated with the wheel mounting. The machine may be used for road-making the rear wheels being replaced by a single wide roller and asphalt emulsion being sprayed into chamber 50 to be mixed with soil.
