Abstract

846,106. Valves. I.V. PRESSURE CONTROLLERS Ltd. Jan. 18, 1957 [Jan. 20, 1956], No. 1994/57. Divided out of 846,105. Class 135. A fluid-control valve comprises a closure member 2 coacting with a seat 3 to control the sole outlet 7 from a chamber 16, and a passage 10 permenently connecting the outlet with a chamber 5 containing a balancing piston 4 the effective area of which is substantially equal to that of the closure member exposed to outlet pressure when the valve is closed. The closure member, which has radial projections 13 against which bears a closing spring 15, is opened by a control rod 12, and the closure member is slotted at 11 to prevent closure of the passage 10 by the rod. The piston 4 carries a rubber &c. sealing ring 8. The arrangement may be such that inlet pressure acting on the closure member is balanced or contributes a small closing force. The passage 10 may alternatively be formed in the housing of the valve, and when the valve discharges to atmosphere the balancing chamber 5 may be open to atmosphere. In a modification, the spring is housed between the bottom of the chamber 5 and a counterbore in the balancing piston, the closure member consists of an upwardly facing, annular knifeedge, and the control rod is integral with the closure member. The invention may be applied to a pressure regulating valve as described in Specification 846,105.
