Abstract

839,447. Pistons. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Dec. 15, 1958 [Oct. 2, 1958], No. 40304/58. Class 122 (1). To reduce piston ring groove wear in internal combustion engines &c. leakage gas pressure build-up between the rings is relieved when the piston 10 is at bottom dead centre by grooves 16 in the cylinder wall 11. The grooves may extend longitudinally of the cylinder bore 11 or, as shown in Fig. 3, at a slight angle thereto and are arranged so that when the piston is at bottom dead centre, as in Fig. 1, they extend from just below the compression ring 21 to just below the oil control ring 24 to thereby vent any leakage gas pressure in the spaces between the rings 21 and 22 and 22 and 23 through passages 31 and 33 in the control ring 24 and piston respectively. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the grooves 16 extend to the bottom of the cylinder wall 11 to communicate with the engine crankcase.
