Abstract

1,068,612. Two-stroke engines. ZWEIRAD UNION A. G. July 3, 1964 [July 4, 1963], No. 27604/64. Heading F1B. In a cross-connected engine with stepped pistons forming working and pumping portions, each cylinder set 1, 3, is formed as a separate casting from its associated cylinder set 2, 4, and the joint 24 between the two portions of each scavenging passage is sealed by an elastic sealing element 23. The working cylinders 1, 2, are formed separate from and secured to the pump cylinders 3, 4, the upper cylinders being centred by annular projections 5a. The transfer passages (10), (14), Fig. 2 (not shown) connecting the pump cylinders to their cross-connected engine cylinders are provided with flap valves (21) which open on the suction stroke to admit air. The scavenging ports 12, 13 are upwardly inclined to direct the air towards a zone above the exhaust port 20. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown) the scavenging ports 37, 38, are on opposite sides of the cylinder with the exhaust port therebetween, a passage 35 extending from the transfer passage 10 to the port 38.
