Abstract

833,689. Submarine cable laying. SUBMARINE CABLES Ltd. Dec. 23, 1957 [Jan. 1, 1957], No. 37/57. Class 78 (5). Means for imparting untwist to an armoured submarine cable C as it is hauled aboard ship, comprises a cone-shaped sheave S, the half-angle α of the cone being defined by:- where:- # = angle of lay of the armour wire; r a = radius of the armour wire; r s = external radius of the cable; R = mean radius of the portion of the cone over which the cable passes: X = length of arc of the cone over which the cable passes. The sheave S is positioned on the bow of the ship to free the cable C from the twist that it has acquired by the effect of tension upon the armour wiring of the cable.
