Abstract
770,700. Laying submarine cables. JOHNSON & PHILLIPS, Ltd., and ASHBY, R. J. Dec. 1, 1955 [Dec. 1, 1954], No. 34784/54. Class 78 (5). A cradle structure 5 for use in submarine cable-laying systems in which the cable 1 passes from the ship 3 over sheave 4 into the sea, the cable being formed with repeaters 2 at intervals, is adapted to receive the repeater and pass therewith round said sheave. As shown, repeater 2 moves forward from the left upon small trolleys 8, 9 until it lands upon cradle 5 supported by trolley 6. The repeater continues to move forward till it engages abutment 12 on the cradle, whereupon rear extension 10 of the cradle is manually pivoted upwards to lock the repeater in the cradle. Additionally, the forward extension of the cradle is manually pivoted upwards and secured by a rope extending between lugs 39, 40 so as to overlap sheave 4. Then the cradle together with the trolley moves forward, the trolley being caught and retained by the sheave guards (not shown) and the repeater together with cradle passing over the sheave. The cradle drops into the sea, to allow the cable with repeater to fall freely behind the ship, the said rope breaking under the stress of the cable so that the cable is guided smoothly by said forward extension into the sea to avoid a sharp bend.
