Abstract

742,272. Laying submarine cables. JOHNSON & PHILLIPS. Ltd., HARTLEY, A. C., and ASHBY, R. J. June 18, 1954 [July 6, 1953], No. 18674/53. Class 78 (5). An apparatus for guiding a submarine cable 8 from a cable-laying ship 4 into the sea, said cable having a repeater (not shown) connected in its line, comprises main pulley 9 and auxiliary pulley 21 which are coupled such that the pull of the rope relatively displaces the pulleys to permit the repeater to pass into the sea without bending round a pulley. As shown, cable 8 passes normally from the ship into the sea over pulley 9 until such time as a repeater approaches, which repeater engages end 6 of trough 2 which is carried on linkage 16 supported by links 15, 19 pivoted to the ship so that linkage and trough move aftwards till stopped by stop 28, at which position the repeater is free to pass over and above pulley 9 into the sea. Cable 25 driven by winch 24 pulls the linkage back to its original position on board ship against stop 27, the trough being pivoted to the linkage at 12 so that it normally rests on the deck, the linkage being accommodated within a slot in the stern of the ship. Specifications 734,082 and 748,227 are referred to.
