Abstract

826,974. Laying submarine cables. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Sept. 30, 1957 [July 20, 1956], No. 22632/56. Class 78 (5). Submarine cable laying apparatus comprises the series of pulleys 4 to 8 forming the subjectmatter of Specification 825,138, in combination with a second series of pulleys 9 to 11 arranged after the first series in the direction of cable passage during laying, the second series having at least one pulley 11 movable transversely to the direction in which the series extends and across the line of cable travel. The apparatus is used for laying a cable 1 containing a rigid repeater housing 2 in similar fashion to that described in the aforementioned Specification 825,138, excepting that the hawser 3 is longer than the cable section which it bridges, the slack being taken up by the movable pulley 11, in the second pulley series, before severance of the hawser from the cable.
