Abstract
4082. Brown, A. E. March 3. Rope railways and tramways.-Fig. 1 shows an elevation of the apparatus, and Figs. 7 and 8 are diagrams showing the arrangement of the cables for lowering and traversing respectively. Two drums D and D' are used which can be driven either in the same or in opposite directions. The cable starting, say, from the drum D passes in succession around the pulleys 6, 4, V<1>, 5, 3, D', 2, V, and 1 to the drum D again. The fall-block is connected to the main rope by a length R attached at S and S'. When the drums are driven in opposite directions, Fig. 7, the carriage T remains fixed, and the fall-block rises or falls. When the drums are driven in the same direction, Fig. 8, the carriage T travels in one direction or the other, but the level of the fall-block is maintained. The rope R may be wound on drums carried by the carriage, these drums being operated from the main drums D and D'.
