Abstract

A metal-cleaning composition comprises (i) 10-40%, preferably 30%, of polyethylene glycol 400 monolaurate, (ii) 5-20%, preferably 15%, of an "amido-sulphonate complex" consisting of a mixture of alkyl aryl sulphonate and an alkylolamide, (iii) 2-10%, preferably 5%, of diethylene glycol dioleate, (iv) 5-25%, preferably 10%, of a non-ionic phosphate derivative surface-active agent, suitably of formula RO.PO(OR1)2, where R is a medium-chain alkyl group and R1 is a solubilizing organic radical, (v) 5-20%, preferably 12%, of polyethylene glycol tert.-dodecyl thioether, (vi) 5-25%, preferably 15%, of a compound of the formula Na5R5(P3O10)2, where R is an organic radical containing 4-12 carbon atoms, (vii) 1-12%, preferably 8%, of a rust inhibitor, suitably a mixture consisting of 38 parts of diethylaminoethanol and 42 parts of dioctyl monoacid orthophosphate, and (viii) 1-10%, preferably 5%, of diethanolamine. The composition may be used as formulated above or as an emulsion formed with up to 3 times its own volume of such organic solvents as ethers, ketones, alcohol, or aromatics. In either case the composition is used in aqueous solutions of 2-10% concentration.
