Abstract

A detergent composition comprises (a) 5-10 parts by weight of a carboxylic acid having a chain of at least 14 carbon atoms in the molecule, such as oleic acid; (b) a synthetic detergent which is liquid at room temperature and normal pressure, such as a mixture of secondary alkyl sodium sulphates with 8-18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group or an alkylphenolethylene oxide condensate, the amount of detergent plus the amount of carboxylic acid being 20-40 parts; (c) 2.5-20 parts of 0.880 ammonia; and (d) water to make up 100 parts. The amount of ammonia is preferably such as to give the composition a pH of 9-10. The diluted composition may be used for laundry purposes at a temperature of about 100 DEG C. in the presence of 1-6 grams per litre, preferably 1-3 grams per litre, of sodium metalicate without detectable evolution of ammonia. The composition is said to be stable to low-temperature storage. Examples are given.
