Abstract

814,253. Drafting fibres. GUIMBRETIERE, L. F., POLLETT, A. G., and SOREZ, E. J. Dec. 20, 1955 [Dec. 22, 1954], No. 36398/55. Class 120(2) Apparatus for carrying out the method of drafting claimed in Specification 719,355 includes a cylinder having projections and operating in association with a resilient element to grip groups of fibres in succession and extract them from a sliver that is fed towards the cylinder. The sliver is preferably given a preliminary drafting, as between rollers 4, 9, 6, 13 with which a belt 3 co-operates. In another embodiment, a porcupine roller is employed in the preliminary drafting arrangement. From the preliminary drafting rollers, the sliver may pass between rollers 17, 18 and over a feed plate 19, the forward end of which is engaged by a belt 22 under a pressure that is variable by rotation of an eccentric roller 27. The belt 22 is made of resilient material, preferably soft rubber, and rotates in conjunction with a cylinder 20 provided with projections that are so arranged as to draw off tufts of fibres in succession across the forward edge of the sliver and feed them on to a perforated belt 31. to which suction is applied. In other embodiments, a cylinder such as 20 co-operates with another roller covered with a thick layer of resilient material. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 9, a covered roller 95 has a perforated belt 96 passing around it. In this embodiment, a pivoted and spring- influenced 'feed plate is provided under which the sliver passes. In other forms of apparatus the sliver is fed by belts to the resilient rollers.
