Abstract
258,929. Sharp, P. June 26,1925. Breaking and scutching apparatus; carding- engines; heckling - machines.-Jute, hemp, flax, and like fibres are passed between a series of pairs of rollers with coarse helical flutes and then between a longer series of pairs of rollers with straight and finer flutes the upper roller of each pair being given a rolling motion over the lower roller. Lubricant is sprayed on to the material during any stage of the treatment. The material is then passed to a heckling and carding machine provided with cne or more combing- rollers rotating in the opposite direction to the workers or strippers and having pins pointing in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation. The material may be passed 'automatically from one device to the other to form a continuous process. The fibres are passed from a conveyer 1, Fig. 1, through a pair 2 of straight fluted feed rollers to a series of pairs 3 of helically and coarsely fluted rollers. They are then fed by a pair 4 of straight fluted rollers to a series of pairs 6 of straight and finely fluted rollers, the upper roller of each pair being given a rolling motion over the lower one. The upper rollers are carried in arms 8 pivoted on the axes of the lower rollers and rocked by eccentrics 10. The upper rollers are weighted by springs 11. The rollers 6 rotate more quickly than the rollers 3, and may be divided into sections, the later section rotating more quickly than the previous one. Lubricant may be sprayed on the fibre at any stage in the machine from a tank 30 through a nozzle 32. The lubricant may be sprayed under pressure, and a number of nozzles arranged to cover the whole surface of the fibres may be employed. The material may be passed either direct, or through an additional set of rocking-rollers, to a conveyer 34a, Fig. 3, which carries it to a single heckling, carding, or combing machine. A takerin 35 delivers the fibres to a cylinder 34 provided with strippers 36 and workers 37. Additional rollers 38, 38a are provided in any appropriate position. These rollers rotate in the opposite direction to the usual strippers and workers and their pins point in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation. The fibres are taken off by a delivery roller 39 and are fed down a guide 42 to a rotary drawing-head E.
