Oct. 13, 1959 'HIROSHI OHNISHI CARDING ENGINE Filed Jan. 25. 1955 ATTORNEYS United States Patent O The present invention relates to a carding engine for carding textile fibers, and more particularly to a carding engine for carding cotton fibers.
There are known carding engines for carding cotton fibers with one or several revolving flat card portions 1 and carding engines for carding wool with one or' several two flat portions.

Cotton carding engines as heretofore known do not produce entirely satisfactory carding results for certain kinds of cotton fibers. The workers and strippers of conventional wool carding engines, while being highly useful for loosening the fibers of wool especially of longiiber material, have been found not to be suitable for use in the cotton industry, except possibly for a limited use 1n cotton coarse spinning.
The principal object of the present invention-is to pro- N vide a novel and improved carding engine especlally of carding of cotton fibers, which combines the advantage of carding by a revolving flat card portion with the advantages of carding by a worker and stripper card.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved mixed or combined carding engine which produces a sliver'consisting of well loosened and parallel fibers and lending itself very well to drawing.
Still another object ofthe invention is to provide a novel and improved carding engine, the carding action of which prevents or at least greatly reduces the formation of neps and nits. v
A further object of the invention isto provide a novel and improved carding engine, the carding action of which is such that substantially all the fiber material fed to the engine is delivered in carded condition to the doffer of the engine. This affords an important advantage over carding engines as heretofore known in which a substantial portion of the useful fiber material is accumulated in the flat carding portions and has to be removed therefrom as waste.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved carding engine. which conveniently permits the adaptation of the carding action to different types of fiber material by varying the speed of the revo lutions of the flat card portions.
According to the invention, the aforementioned and other objects, features and advantages are attained by providing several revolving flat card portions and a roller card including a stripper and a worker between each two flat card portions so that the carding action to which the Web of fibers is subjected changes from that of a flat portion to that of a worker and stripper card and back again to that of a flat card portion. As a result of this repeated change in the carding action the aforementioned advantages are attained.
In the single figure of the accompanying drawing, a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown by way of illustration and not by way of limitation.
Referring to the drawing, it is apparent that the exem- 2,908,046 Patented Oct. 1959 Ice seen in the'figure, that is, the fiber material to be carded is fed to the engine at the right side thereof and is removed therefrom at the left side.
Accordingly, the fiber material such as cotton is fitted in a suitable manner in a slotted standard 1 from where it is transferred to a taker-in or licker-in 2 which feeds the material to the main cylinder or swift 3. The cylinder coacts with a first or anterior revolving flatportion generally designated by4, a second or posterior revolving or flat portion generally. designated by 5 and a roller card generally designated by 6 and disposed betweenthe Each of the two flat portions 'comand 9. Each of the chains'or belts has the conventional stroking clothing 7' including a multitude of pins. Each of the flat portions is further provided with a spring loaded tensioning device 10 of conventional design to permit adjustment of the tension of the revolving chain or belt 7. i
To permit removal of fibers accumulating on the flat portions a cleaning device 11 is provided for each flat card portion. Each .of the cleaning devices comprises a rotary cylinder 12 from which radially extend pins or bristles 13 to comb fibers out of flat card portions. As maybe noted, the cleaning devices 11 coact with the outside of the belt or chain 17. A further cleaning device 14 also provided with revolving bristles or needles 15 coacts with the inside of chain or belt 7 or fiat card portion 5.
The roller card 6 comprises a worker 16 also called a roller and a stripper 17 also called a clearer roller. Stripper 17 is disposed adjacent to the posterior end of flat card portion 4 in coaction with this end and also with the worker and the cylinder. 'The worker in .turn coacts with the anterior end of flat card portion 5 and the cylinder.

The operation of the carding engine as hereinbefore described is' as follows:
The raw fiber material after leaving taker-in 2 is transferred to main cylinder 3 and first carded between flat card portion 4 and the cylinder in a well understood manner.
During this carding operation, part of the fiber material will be retained in the clothing of card portion 4. Such retained fiber material, which in conventional carding engines would be waste, is substantially recovered from the clothing of card portion 4 by the coaction of stripper 17 with card portion 4 atpoint a and returned to the cylinder at point b. As is apparent, card portion 4 and stripper 17 revolve in opposite directions. Furthermore, fiber material accumulating on worker 16 will be substantially recovered therefrom at point c and also deposited by the stripper at point 12. As a result, practically the entire fiber material transferred by taker-in 2 to the cylinder will reach the second or posterior flat card portion 5. When the fiber material reaches this second flat card portion, it has already undergone a substantially stroking and straightening action so that the loss of fiber material in the second flat card portion is comparatively negligible.
Practical tests have shown that a carding engine according to the invention produces an excellent carding effect with a minimum of Waste.
By varying the adjustment of the flat card portions, the
same can be set for different speed dependingupon the properties'of the fiber material to be carded.

'1. :A'carding engine for carding textilefibers, comprising'a rotatableniain cylinder, feed means 'for feeding fiber material over 'sa'idcylinder and through the engine, a pair of 'cir'cumferentially spaced revolving flat card'portions coacting with the cylinder'to effect carding of fiber rna- 'terial fed thereto, and a roller card portion including a wo'rker-a nd a stripper card disposed between said two flat card portions in 'coaction with eachother, the flat card' portio'ns and with the cylinder to effect carding of fiber material fed thereto. r 2. A carding engine according to claim 1, wherein the said stripper card is disposed adjacent to the posterior end of the anterior flat card portion as seen inv the direction of travel of the fiber material, in coaction with said end.

A carding engine according to claim 3, and further comprising first cleaning means disposed at the rear'end of the first flat card portion in coacting relationship 'there- 'with, and second cleaning means disposed at'the rear end of the second flat card portion in coacting relationship therewith. A carding engine according'to claim 4, and additionally comprising third cleaning means'coactin'g with said second flat card portion, said second cleaning means being disposed for action upon the outside of said second flat card portion and said third cleaning means being disposed for action upon the inside of said second flat card portion. 1 Y
6. A carding engine according to claim 3 and further comprising adjustable -te nsioni ng' means coacting with said first flat card portion for adjusting the tension thereof, and adjustable tensioning means coacting with said second flat card portionfor adjusting the tension thereof.

8. A carding engine according to claim 7 wherein said two flat card: portions, said stripper and said worker all revolve in the same direction "whereby the coacting 'circumferential surfaces thereof meet each other in opposite direction.
