Abstract
813,565. Tubular heat exchange elements; gas heaters. ESCHER WYSS A.G. July 19, 1957 [July 20, 1956], No. 22938/57. Classes 64(1) and 64(3) A tubular heat exchange element comprises a tube 1 closed at one end and a helically twisted strip 2 of width equal to the inside diameter of the tube extending axially within the tube, the end of the strip being spaced by a gap 5 from the closed end of the tube whereby a gas entering the tube may be caused to flow along one side of the helical strip to the closed end of the tube and to return along the other side of the helical strip to the open end of the tube. External longitudinal fins 6 may be provided on the tube 1. Arrangements employing a plurality of such elements are described both for a series and parallel flow of gas through the elements. In a gas heater (Fig. 7), a number of the elements 1 are arranged in a combustion chamber 40, and extend in a direction transverse to the direction of flow of the combustion gases from a burner 41, the length of successive elements increasing -in the direction of gas flow as shown. The arrangement of elements 1 serves to protect from radiant heat, the convection surface 44 located downstream of the elements 1. A gas heater in which the elements 1 extend in a direction parallel to the direction of flow of the combustion gases is described.
