811,000. Grinding. TAYLOR (HOLDINGS) Ltd., J. & H. Nov. 7, 1957, No. 34788/57. Class 60. The drive to the grinding wheel W of a machine for grinding the edges of lenses is transmitted from a driving sleeve 7 to a sleeve 8 on which the grinding wheel is carried, both sleeves being rotatablymounted on a stationary spindle 1. The spindle is supported by brackets 2, 3 on a base B and, at one end, supports the beltdriven sleeve 7, which is rotatably mounted in bearings 9, in an upstanding bracket 6, and, at the other end, supports the rotatably-mounted sleeve 8 which carries the grinding wheel W and is axially-floating against a spring 30 bearing against an adjustable collar 27 on the spindle. The drive .between the sleeves is transmitted by means of a crank 17 on a member 16 secured to the sleeve 7 engaging a slot 18 in a member 20 secured to the sleeve 8. Guard plates 23, 24 prevent coolant and glass particles reaching the bearing surfaces of the sleeve 8 and are provided with clearance or sliding fit holes to permit axial movement of the sleeve 8.
