A grinding machine comprises a wheelhead 19 which has two grinding wheels 16, 17 mounted at opposite ends of a common spindle 15 and is turnable about a vertical axis to bring one or other of the grinding wheels into an operative position and a horizontal axis for machining at an adjustable angle, the spindle being driven by an electric motor 26 which is supported on the wheelhead with its axis parallel to that of the spindle and is movable relative to the spindle into two alternative positions in which it extends respectively adjacent to one end or the other of the wheel spindle. The spindle is mounted within bearings 18 in the wheelhead which is formed with a spigot 20 engaging bearing surfaces 20a in a support bracket 21, a worm-and-wheel arrangement 34, 35 being provided to effect adjustment of the wheelhead in the bracket, the adjustment being about a horizontal axis. The bracket is supported on the machine for adjustment about a vertical axis. A plate 23 is supported for rotation on bearings 24 on the spigot and a spring-loaded plunger 25 is engageable with one or other of a pair of notches 22a, 22b to locate the plate in positions 180 degrees from each other. The plate carries the motor 26 which is connected by a belt drive 30 to the spindle 15, the belt being removed during adjustment of the motor between its positions shown solid and dotted in which it is adjacent one or other of the grinding wheels, which wheel is then inoperative and the other operative wheel is not obstructed by the motor. The machine may be used for grinding, milling and like rotary cutters and other tools. A known machine is described having a spindle which has a pulley adjacent one of the grinding wheels and connected by a belt to a pulley on the shaft of a motor mounted in fixed position relative to the spindle on a wheelhead.
