Abstract

805,417. Rubber spring units; railway vehicle undercarriages. METALASTIK, Ltd. July 12, 1956 [July 20, 1955], No. 21068/55. Classes 103(6) and 108(3) A spring system comprises a pair of precompressed rubber springs 10, 11, arranged in V-formation and having considerable length in relation to their width, the springs being arranged with their longitudinal axes in a common plane, and so that when loaded they are in combined shear and compression, means being provided to control transverse movement of the pair of springs 10, 11. Each spring 10, 11, comprises a series of rubber discs 13, interleaves 14, and an intermediate rigid plate 12, acting between a bolster 16 and a bogie frame 15. In its simplest form, the invention consists of off-setting the axis of the rubber discs 13 on one side of the plate 12 from the axis of the discs 13 lying on the other side of the plate 12. As shown however, in addition, the plates 12 of the springs 10, 11 are coupled together by side plates 21, 22, on respective sides of the springs. Flanges 25 rigid with the side plates 22 are rigid with the tie rods 24 which thus couple the side plates 22 of the springs 10, 11, on one side of the bolster, with the side plates 22 of the springs 10, 11 on the other side of the bolster. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown), each tie rod 24 may be divided at its centre and the two halves may be coupled by a joint which permits a limited degree of angular motion between them. This coupling may comprise a ball joint with, or without, an interlayer of rubber. It may comprise a pin rigid with one half-rod disposed within a sleeve rigid with the other half-rod, with or without the interposition of a sleeve of rubber. The apex of each V-formed by the springs 10, 11, is inclined slightly inwardly towards the centre of the bolster. The rods 24 may alternatively be replaced by linkage connections between each plate 12, and either the bolster 16, or the bogie frame 15.
