Abstract

5 - Sulphanilamido - 3:4 - dimethyl - isoxazole is prepared by reducing p:p1-[bis-(3:4-dimethyl - isoxazolyl - 5) aminosulphonyl]-azobenzene in a highly acidic medium. The reduction may suitably be effected by catalytic hydrogenation preferably with a noble metal catalyst, or by non-catalytic reducing agents, for example tin, stannous salts or hydrogen iodide, in the presence of a strongly acidic agent such as sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid or boron trifluoride. Examples describe the reduction of p:p1-[bis-(3:4-dimethyl-isoxazolyl-5) aminosulphonyl] azobenzene to 5 - sulphanilamido - 3:4 - dimethyl - isoxazole, (1) by hydrogenation in the presence of a palladium catalyst in a mixture of acetic and hydrochloric acids; (2) by hydrogenation as in (1) in a mixture of acetic and sulphuric acids; (3) by hydrogenation with a platinum catalyst in the presence of acetic acid and boron trifluoride and (4) by the action of tin and stannous chloride in concentrated hydrochloric acid.
