Abstract

Bivanillyl (4:41-dihydroxy-3:31-dimethoxydiphenyl-(1:11) -ethane) is prepared by reducing hydrovanilloin with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and a solvent. In examples hydrovanilloin in solution in ethanol, aqueous sodium hydroxide solution or acetic acid is hydrogenated using copper chromite, Raney nickel or platinum oxide as catalyst.
